Getting the Glow — Exfoliation
The outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, provides a direct barrier between our internal and external environments. Skin in the epidermis is in a constant state of regeneration — new cells are produced in the deeper layers, mature, and gradually migrate to the top layer of the skin, changing in structure and function along the way. As skin cells transition towards the outermost later of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, they become flattened, keratin filled envelopes that no longer have organelles and are no longer capable of cellular division. These cells are called keratinocytes, and they are held together by a matrix of protein bonds that help give strength to the stratum corneum and help your skin form a protective barrier from the outside environment.

Once skin cells reach the outermost layers of the stratum corneum, they are naturally shed to make way for newer skin cells. As we age, skin cell turnover rates slow significantly; a process that takes 2-3 weeks in young skin can take upwards of 6-8 weeks in mature skin. When skin cells are not shed properly, they accumulate on the skin’s surface, resulting in rough, dry, dull looking skin, clogged pores, and blemishes.

Incorporating exfoliation into your skin care regimen is a fantastic way to promote healthy skin cells turnover with age. There are two main types of exfoliating products — mechanical exfoliants use abrasive ingredients such as sugar, salt, or pumice to mechanically remove dead cells from the skin’s surface, while chemical exfoliants use ingredients that help break down that protein bonds that hold dead skin cells together so that they are more easily sloughed off.
